Design dilemma:
My son is 15 and wants his bedroom decorated and some new furniture. I want to get away from pine - what do you suggest?
Design solution:
There's nothing wrong with pine furniture - it all depends on how you decorate around it. If the furniture still serves its purpose, consider painting it in a colour to change its look. If you're really sick of it, you could go for a complete change and invest in some metal-framed pieces, which are sturdy and have quite a masculine look. Personally though, I like the idea of a wooden futon in a boy's room that he can fold down to sleep in and fold up again into a sofa when he has his mates round - much more sophisticated and grown-up than a single bed!
When it comes to colour, get away from the typical boysy blue and opt instead for an energising, funky red on the walls with a mix of bold coloured accessories of your son's choosing. You could even ask him to decorate one wall with his own work of art - say a collage of photocopied school pics, a collection of old skateboarding T-shirts, an oversized world atlas, graffiti art, or whatever he's inspired by. Boys can be messy, so lay something hardwearing on the floor. A rubber or vinyl flooring in a bright colour would complete this look.
